Thailand's LNG Boom Risks Slowing Southeast Asia's Energy Transition

    Feb 25,2024 | DAXTROMNSOLAR

Thailand's increasing reliance on liquefied natural gas (LNG) may pose challenges to the energy transition in Southeast Asia. As the country expands its LNG infrastructure, critics argue that it could hinder the region's shift towards renewable energy sources. Thailand's state-controlled energy company, PTT, is planning to invest $21 billion over the next five years to develop LNG terminals and power plants. This heavy investment in LNG may divert attention and resources away from renewable energy projects, complicating Southeast Asia's efforts to reduce carbon emissions and combat climate change.

The introduction of LNG into Thailand's energy mix is a response to the country's growing energy demand and the declining domestic natural gas production. Thailand aims to increase LNG consumption from 15 percent to 30 percent of the total energy supply by 2036. However, environmental activists and clean energy researchers stress the urgent need to prioritize renewables and address the adverse environmental impacts associated with LNG usage. They argue that the expansion of LNG infrastructure could lock the country into a fossil fuel-centric energy future.

In order to promote a sustainable energy transition in Southeast Asia, it is crucial for countries like Thailand to diversify their energy sources and invest in renewable energy technologies. While LNG has its advantages in terms of flexibility and reliability, it should be viewed as a transitional solution rather than a long-term strategy. Governments and energy companies need to prioritize the development of solar, wind, and hydro power, which have immense potential in the region.
